Taylor & Francis Author Template Instructions – Microsoft Word 2016 (Windows)
Version: March 12, 2025
This template is designed to help you prepare your manuscript for submission to a journal. If your manuscript is accepted for publication, the template will also help the publisher to process it more efficiently.
To save the template to your computer:
• First, locate and open your Templates folder. In Windows 10 or 11, open File Explorer (Windows key + E) and enter the following in the address bar:%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates
Alternatively, paste the same path into the Start menu search bar.
• If you cannot find the Templates folder: open Word → File → Options → Advanced → scroll down → File Locations → double-click User Templates to open the folder.
• Click on the template link and save the file to this folder. The template comes as a ZIP (compressed) file, which must be extracted before use.
• Extract the Word template from the ZIP file and save it to the Templates folder as a Microsoft Office Word Template (.dotx). You can then delete the ZIP file; the template is now ready to use.
To create a new document based on the template:
• After placing the template in the folder, double-click the “T&F Template Word Windows” file.
• A new Word document based on the template will open. Immediately Save As (.docx) with your preferred file name.
• To view the custom styles: click the Home tab. The Style Gallery will appear in the upper right. Click the small arrow in the lower-right corner to open the Styles pane.
• To enable the Custom Toolbars, click the Add-ins tab at the top. If it is not visible, follow these steps:
File → Options → Customize Ribbon
On the right side, choose Main Tabs from the drop-down menu.
Make sure both “Developer” and “Add-ins” are checked, then click OK.
The Developer and Add-ins tabs should now appear at the top. Click Add-ins; two custom toolbars will appear.
• Highlight a section of text (e.g., the title) and type your own text over it.
• Delete any style categories you do not need as you go through the document.
• When finished, save the file. It will be saved as a Word document in the location you specified.
To format an existing document using the template (it is recommended to back up your file first):
• With the template in place, open your manuscript in Word.
• Go to the Home tab and open the Styles pane.
• File → Options → Customize Ribbon → check Developer and Add-ins → OK.
• Developer → Document Template → click Attach → select “T&F Template Word Windows” → Open.
• Make sure "Automatically update document styles" is checked. (Other global add-ins may need to be temporarily disabled.)
• Click OK. The Add-ins tab should now be visible, and custom toolbars should appear.
• Highlight or place your cursor in a text section (e.g., article title), then click the appropriate style in the toolbar to apply it.
• Apply styles throughout the document as needed. Word will handle paragraph spacing automatically—extra line breaks are usually unnecessary.
• Save As (.docx) with your preferred file name.
